Black Cat Day

In the heart of autumn, as days grow shorter and nights take on a mysterious hue, November 17th shines in a unique light, it's Black Cat Day, a time when the allure of these enigmatic felines comes to life.

  • Black Cat Day was established in 2007 by AIDAA, the Italian Association for the Defense of Animals and the Environment.

For centuries, black cats have been cloaked in mystery and superstition: viewed as witches' companions, omens of misfortune, and symbols of darkness.

In some cultures, crossing their path was considered an ominous sign.

  • To challenge these old beliefs and prejudices, a significant date was chosen: November 17, a number in Italy often associated with bad luck. It’s a reversal of perspective, transforming an old stigma into a chance to celebrate the beauty concealed within mystery.

Black Cat Day was established not only to break the chains of prejudice but also to protect these animals.

In the past—and, unfortunately, even today—black cats have often been victims of abandonment and mistreatment, rejected due to lingering myths.

  • Every year on November 17, we are invited to look beyond the shadows, rediscover the worth of what’s different, and open our homes to these dark-coated, bright-eyed companions.

Year after year, Black Cat Day has grown into a symbol of renewal and unconditional love for black cats who, with their silent stride, bring moments of companionship and affection to those bold enough to defy superstition.
